HATTIE JACQUES: THE AUTHORISED BIOGRAPHY
It’s been a long time coming, but it’s finally here!
The Authorised biography of Hattie Jacques written by Andrew Merriman will hit the shelves on the 27th of September and yours truly will be first in line for a copy!
“For over thirty years Hattie Jacques was a familiar presence on radio (Hancock's "Half Hour"), television (60 episodes of "Sykes" alone) and film (she was a stalwart of the "Carry On" series). But her stage persona of a buxom, masterful female dragon who, both literally and figuratively, carried all before her (the formidable matron of "Carry On, Nurse" was a typical role) could hardly have been more at odds with her off-stage personality. Warm, impetuous and generous to a fault, she was almost pathetically grateful for any show of affection and painfully self-conscious about her figure which, she believed, had caused her to be type-cast in comic roles and never given the opportunity to tackle more serious parts. In 1947, after a tempestuous wartime affair with an American officer, she married the actor John Le Mesurier who was persuaded to divorce her in 1965 - though only after she had moved her chauffeur-lover into the marital home. It was, however typical of her that she actively encouraged Le Mesurier to remarry and the two remained firm friends until her death. Her lover's subsequent desertion was a bitter blow from which she never fully recovered, though she compensated my involving herself deeply in charity work and becoming a confidante to many of the young actors and actresses with whom she worked. This biography has been written with the help and encouragement of Hattie's surviving son and her many friends, including Barbara Windsor, Clive Dunn, Bill Pertwee and John Le Mesurier. This is the first full biography of one of Britain's best-loved actresses. It reveals the secrets of the sometimes strange and often sad private life that was concealed behind the matronly facade. It is written with the full cooperation and support of Hattie's family and friends.”

It was she who secured Hancock's first big break in radio - on "Variety Bandbox" and negotiated much better fees, so much so, that he broke the £500-a-week barrier when he joined the cast of "London Laughs" in April 1952.To view Phyllis Rounce's Obituary, click here

Hancock's Half Hour - Second Series CD Box Set :
Released 5th March 2001

Sir Harry Secombe
We were sorry to hear of the death of Sir Harry Secombe on April 11th.
Sir Harry was a friend of Hancock's, having worked with him on a number of occasions. They first worked together in April 1949, for a week's variety at Feldman's Theatre, Blackpool. In June 1952, they starred in an edition of "Calling All Forces" on the BBC Light Programme.
In April 1955, Hancock "disappeared" right at the start of the second series of "Hancock's Half Hour" on BBC Radio. His place was taken by Harry Secombe for the first three shows. Hancock returned for the rest of the series and Harry Secombe was a guest in the fourth show "A Visit to Swansea". The BBC have recently released the Second Series in a CD Box Set, but the shows featuring Harry Secombe are not included as they no longer exist (unless you have a copy!!! - if so, let us know).
They last worked together when Hancock appeared on a show in Sir Harry's ATV series "Secombe and Friends" on 13th November 1966.
It was Sir Harry who unveiled the Hancock statue in Old Square, Birmingham on 13th May 1996 and many Hancock fans were gathered there to see him on that important Hancock occasion.
Sir Harry Secombe will of course be remembered by most people as one of The Goons, but us Hancock fans say a special fond farewell to him as a friend of Tony Hancock and a great all-rounder.
I think that Barry Cryer summed up Sir Harry very well, when he was interviewed just hours after Sir Harry's death : "What you saw was what you got with Harry Secombe" - he was a good man both in public and in private.
